Where Does Your Device Go When You Drop It Off? 8 Questions to Ask Any Repair Shop

Where Does Your Device Go When You Drop It Off? 8 Questions to Ask Any Repair Shop

You hand over your phone, laptop, or game console, get a claim ticket, and walk out. Then what? For most people, that's a black box. You assume the device will sit on a bench in that same building until you come back.

Usually that's true. But some shops send customers' devices out to other companies or outside labs and don't mention it. Whatever the reason, the customer often finds out late, if at all. A device holds your photos, messages, banking apps, and passwords, so you should know where it is and who has it.

You don't have to be an expert to ask. Here are eight questions worth asking any repair shop, including us.

1. Who will actually work on my device?

Ask whether the person you're talking to does the repair, or whether someone else does. A shop with its own technicians will tell you right away.

2. Will it stay in this building the whole time?

A simple question deserves a simple answer: "Yes, it stays here," or "No, part of it goes elsewhere, and here's why."

3. If any part of the job gets sent out, will you tell me first?

Sometimes a job really does need a specialist, such as a badly damaged drive that needs data recovery. That's not a bad thing on its own. What matters is whether you're told and whether you get to decide.

4. What happens to my data and my passcode?

Some repairs need your device unlocked so the technician can test it afterward, and some don't. Ask which one yours is. Ask who will have access to your passcode and what they'll do with it. A good shop only asks for what the job requires and is happy to explain why. Back up your device first if you can, and change your passcode afterward if you shared it.

5. Can I get a written estimate before any work starts?

You should see the price, what it covers, and what it doesn't. If the shop finds something new once the device is open, ask them to call or text you before going ahead. The price you agreed to should be the price you pay unless you approve a change.

6. Is there a fee just to look at it?

Many shops charge a diagnostic fee, and that can be fair, since finding a problem takes real time and skill. The point is that you hear about it up front and agree to it, not that you see it on the bill later.

7. What kind of parts are you using, and is there a warranty?

Parts come in different qualities, and prices vary with them. Ask what's going into your device, how long the warranty lasts, and what it covers.

8. What happens to the old parts?

It's a fair question. If a shop replaced your screen or battery, you can ask for the old part back, or ask how it's disposed of. Old lithium-ion batteries in particular need proper handling and can't go in the regular trash in New York.

What we do at Tech Station

We'd rather you ask than wonder, so here are our answers, plainly.

  • Repairs are done in-house. Your device is repaired right here at our shop in Latham, by us.
  • Estimates are free. You'll know what we think the repair will cost before you commit to anything.
  • Diagnostics are disclosed and approved first. If your device needs a diagnostic, it runs $40 to $100. We tell you about it and get your okay before we start.
  • Nothing happens beyond the approved estimate without your clear okay. If we find something else, we'll call or text you, explain it, and wait for your answer.
  • If a job ever needs a specialist, we explain it and you decide first. That can happen with certain data recovery cases. You'll hear what's involved, and nothing goes anywhere until you say yes.

We can't promise every device can be fixed. Some are too far gone, and we'll tell you honestly when that's the case instead of charging you for a hopeful guess.

Before you hand over any device

Back up what you can, take a quick photo of the device as it is, and keep your receipt. Ask your questions before you leave the counter, not after. A good repair shop won't be bothered by any of this, and if a question gets a defensive answer or a shrug, take that into account when you decide where to go.
