Laptop Charging Port and Battery Repair in Latham, NY

If your laptop will not charge, only charges at a weird angle or will not turn on, the fault is often the charging port, the DC jack or the battery. Sometimes it is damage on the board itself. Tech Station LLC does that work in Latham at 6 Northway Lane, including board-level microsoldering when the port is soldered down.

We serve Latham, Albany, Troy, Clifton Park, Schenectady and the Capital Region by appointment. Diagnostics are free, and you get a free estimate before any repair starts. The examples below are common jobs, not a closed list. We repair most electronics we can take on safely.

Charging port and DC jack problems

Signs we see a lot:

  • The charger wiggles and only works in one position
  • The barrel jack or USB-C port is loose, cracked or burnt
  • The laptop runs on the wall adapter but the battery never gains percent
  • You smell heat from the port after a cheap adapter was used

On many Windows laptops the DC jack is soldered to the board. On a growing number of ultrabooks and MacBooks the USB-C port sits on a small board or on the logic board. Replacing that port is microsoldering work, not a simple plug swap. We inspect first and tell you whether a port, a cable, a board or the power circuitry is the real problem.

Laptop battery problems

A battery that drains in an hour, drops from 40% to zero, or bows the palm rest is due for service. Swollen cells can crack screens and trackpads. If the case is lifting, stop charging it, back up what you can while it still boots and book a drop-off. More safety steps are in our swollen battery guide.

We replace laptop batteries when the model allows a safe install. Some batteries are glued or nested under other parts. We will say so in the estimate.

When the laptop will not turn on

No lights, no fan, no logos. Or a brief blink and then nothing. Causes range from a dead battery and a damaged port to a shorted power rail on the board. Free diagnostics separate "needs a battery" from "needs board work" from "the files should come off before we go further." If data is the priority, start with data recovery.

Board-level repair, done here

Tech Station does microsoldering in house in Latham. Charging ports, DC jacks, power connectors and liquid-damaged power circuits are examples of board-level jobs. Not every board can be saved, and not every part is available. If we cannot fix it, we explain what we found. Deeper context on ports, power faults and liquid damage lives on our microsoldering and board-level repair page.

What to do before you bring it in

  1. Bring the original charger if you have it. Off-brand bricks complicate testing.
  2. Back up files while the machine still boots, if it does.
  3. Note when the problem started and whether there was a spill, drop or new charger.
  4. For a swollen battery, do not press the bulging area and do not keep it on charge overnight.
  5. Book ahead. The shop is appointment only.

Questions

No. A bad port or DC jack can look like a bad battery, and a bad battery can look like a bad port. Free diagnostics tell you which one you actually need. Sometimes both.
